Ellisys releases new time-saving Instant Beacons and Superframe views to enable real-time debugging of multiple networked WiMedia devices

Geneva, Switzerland — July 9, 2007 — Ellisys, a leading supplier of test solutions for USB, Wireless USB and the WiMedia Platform, today announced new Instant Beacons and Instant Superframe features, the latest in its series of productivity-enhancing Instant™ functions for the company's WiMedia protocol analyzer.

Beacons are special-purpose frames exchanged by all devices in a WiMedia personal area network (PAN) to both signal their presence and reserve bandwidth. Since it is expected that many consumers will eventually have multiple wireless devices – MP3 players, cameras, printers, scanners, etc. – being able to verify the simultaneous operation of multiple devices is an important step in interoperability testing and quality assurance. Beacon frames contain status information that can be examined to determine how various devices are working together.

The Instant Beacons view creates a table of all devices and their recognition status by other devices in the network. Since Ellisys protocol analyzers operate in real-time, the view is constantly updated to reflect device behaviour. The Instant Beacons function can also play back a previously-recorded trace for further in-depth debugging.

The alternate approach to using the Instant Beacons view is to capture and manually check beacon traffic with post-processing. This is a time-consuming process, especially when using protocol analyzers that do not operate in real-time but rather capture and process a trace file.

Also new in the Ellisys WiMedia protocol analysis software is the Instant Superframe function. In the WiMedia protocol, a superframe is a fixed-duration containing time slots for beacon traffic and data transfers. The unique Instant Superframe view displays all frames sent by devices within their allocated time slot reservations. Reservation policies are analyzed and violations are clearly identified for simplified debugging. As with the Instant Beacons function, the Instant Superframe view works in real-time and can also play back a trace for reviewing traffic evolution.

Instant Beacons and Instant Superframe supplement the Instant Timing, Instant Filter, Instant Search and other Ellisys Instant™ functions included in the company's WiMedia protocol analysis software.
